Vox Proxy

Blog by Skillachi  Blogging in Geek N U, Geek Seek, Geek Tech, rand()

Well you all know the situation. Your at work and your boss comes to you and says “You Geek boy, make a presentation on how geeky you really are” and of course the first thing you say is, “ok boss” and you think to yourself. Wow this is gonna be a breeze.

You open up powerpoint (or whatever presentation software) and you start your work. After 30 slides you realize, the presentation is boring and it will probably put the whole room to sleep, you make the presentation flashy, things blink, things jump, things change colour but its still not flashy enough. You give the presentation though and as predicted half the room is sleeping by the time u reach page 10. When you are finished, everybody gives u congratulations on a good presentation but you know they are just encouraging you, you vow to do better on the next one…

Well I have stumbled upon a program that allows you to make your presentations at least 40% livelier. A little program by the name of Vox Proxy. Now firstly, this program is only compatible with Powerpoint (sorry Cyberpunk), and thats not much of a negative becuz 80% of us work in a windows only environment. What this program does is, it adds a little character (or a number of different characters) to your presentation and allows you to set a script for the presentation in which you and your listeners can interact with your presentation like you are talking to somebody for real. Because its a voice synthesizer its a little challenging to get pronounciations just the way you want it, but when you do, you will be more than satisfied with your work.

Not only do these characters talk, they also move around and have various different actions and move around the presentation at your command and every character has at least 50 different actions to make and limitless words because they say anything you want it to say.

I have created a script in this program that has fooled people that I was speaking with the computer and have even gone as far as to make the program interact with people by setting a few lines and picking which one to say while the program is running. This program is an extremely good and well thought out program.

My only negatives about the program are that firstly the voices sound… well robotic, it is expected though as no synthesizing (publicly available) has reached the level of sounding completely human. But all is not lost, the full version of the program comes with an expansion that allows the use of voices called the at&t voices which sound very close to human and unless you want to talk to a robot then this is something u need to get to get. My other gripe about this program is the fact that I find it hard (and still do) to get the presentation to run on other computers. Basically the problem is, in order to run the presentation you have to have vox proxy installed on the computer (basically 30 mbs, not that big), or you have to have the vox proxy player installed on the computer (same 30 mbs) I find however that sometimes I will run it and characters wont come up and all forms of stuff, but I have really rushed into the program without reading the instructions, so that is something I will figure out soon. All in all though this program is excellent, if we were rating the program, I would give it a score of 4/5.

Screenshots will come soon

The Argument Clinic.

Blog by Nestersan  Blogging in Geek Alerts, Geek Seek, Rant a Geek

The clinic is open!

Yes thats right we are back! Despite numerous hacks, tens of thousands of fake posts and a site owner, designer, programmer and maintainer (ie me) who has completely forgotten about the very existence of this site for the past year we have returned!

This is a site dedicated to the ancient art of the argument. Whether you are looking for a heated debate on politics, God or the meaning of life, or want to shout at someone for no better reason than it feels good, this is the place to do it.
Why are we here?

How many times were you told to stop arguing as a kid? How often have you had to avoid arguing with a moron just because that moron is your boss? Day after day potential arguments are being snuffed out before they can even begin and I say enough!

Fight for your right to argue! Arguments and debates are vital social tools, we need these skills if we are to be succesful in virtually any walk of life so dont hold back any longer. Argue, debate, dispute, quibble, bicker, contend…you know you want to.

Oh yeahhhhhh. I think I will be a lifetime member.

Geek Gatherings

Blog by cyberpunk  Blogging in Geek Seek

Where can the geek go. There aren’t much places they generally say. But thats not entirely true.  For the urban geek there is area 51 in halfway tree clock tower plaza, where you can get your game geek on. Gears of war is generally a popular thing there, however i’m not the best person to tarry on area 51 as I’ve only been there about 3 times to play the worlds best 2d fighter ever developed no its not street fighter it is GUILTY GEAR XX Reloaded.

There is the jalug (jamaica linux user group) meetings which take place the second saturday of every month in new kingston. There you can unlease the Geek N U questions that you have from some of the most proficient users of linux  based operating systems.

The ocassional quaterly anime synergy Trading day and the frequent anime synergy dinners. Where the anime geek / otaku’s gather eat some food have some fun trade some anime enjoy the company of others that are interested in the same things as they are

The anual  intcomex expo cannot miss any who call them self a geek or believes in their inner geek. Keeping your self abreast with the available technology in your country and at your immediate disposal if needed is a necessity .

I’m sure there are more but I can only think of those at the moment. Add more in comments if you have any.
