After celebrating my first birthday last week. I came to the realization that, people simply don’t know how to shop for a geek.
I remember being asked months before my birthday I was being asked what I want for my birthday, because of this I’m led to wonder, are geeks really that hard to shop for? Well I am here to re-educate people on what geeks really want.
First of all, remember technology is always high up on the list of things that we want. It would be nice to get a digital camera for our birthdays. However, remember that because we are so geeky, we need specific cameras. A regular digital camera will not work for a geek as we need high resolution pictures so that we can later gawk at them with our 19-21″ monitors. While we may not say it. We like high megapixels, as a matter of fact 5 should be the least you want to get. Of course for the most of us the best thing to get would just be a digital slr camera but I’m trying to keep the gifts affordable so I wont go into that… That’s for christmas :D.
Next most geeks like music. We listen to it all the time, when we are programming we need music, when we are surfing the net we need music, when we are sleeping sometimes we like to make music rock us to sleep. So of course what I’m getting at here is that MP3 players are high up on that list. Do not I repeat do not buy CD-players. While some of us may have our trusty mp3/cd player with us at all times (thats you cyberpunk), it would be nice to upgrade so that we no longer have to walk with this huge cd pouch for storing 25 odd cd’s. As an afterthought, please don’t try to buy us music cd’s, some of us are trying to take cd’s out of our lives and even then may not want to buy an album from any artist when all we want to hear is one song. It would be better to get us a gift card so that we can either buy the album our selves or give us the money so we can pay to download them online. Please ensure that the MP3 player you buy for your geek has at least 5Gb (remember I’m keeping it cheap so no 80Gb Ipod), we dont want to replace Cd’s only to find out that every other day we have to be deleting and adding music to our players.
I am not gonna talk about cell phones because the perfect phone for us geeks would cost around $500 upwards. So thats for the christmas edition. However other cheap random gifts that you can get for your Geek are stuff like, 8Gb Thumb Drives - Yes we know we already have a 4Gb but more than likely thats filled with stuff for work, we want something where we can store our dvd’s on for crying out loud. Upgrades to our previous products for example, if we already have a camera, buy us a 2gb memory stick, if its an slr buy us that high zoom telephoto lens, if our computer has a 256Mb Graphics card, buy us a 512 (or even 2 of them), if we have 500Gb HD space, buy us 500 more (HDs are getting cheaper nowadays), if… well you get the picture. Also random techfoolery (i coined a word w00t) sometimes work. Those random gadgets you see people talking about like docs for ipod that move with the music etc, we like that kind of stuff, it can keep us entertained for a huge amount of time.
Last but not least, please remember that geeks are regular people just more inclined to technology. So we do like regular stuff too, alot of our Geekettes (i coined another word w00t!!!!1!!!one!!!) still like teddy bears and everything pink. So dont be afraid to buy her the perfume that you saw. Most of the time also we like jewelry, hey everybody likes to look good. A nice watch can work as a unisex gift, chains, bracelets, the list goes on and on.
Finally, please remember to save for christmas ![]()

back onto topic maybe you should do a how to shop for a geek guide
